Prescribed burning for management of hawthorn and alder

, : Prescribed burning for management of hawthorn and alder. New York Fish and Game Journal 23(10): 160-169

A 1.3-ha field containing hawthorn (Crataegus sp.) and alder (Alnus rugosa) was burned in April 1973. Post-burn analysis of 20 hawthorns and 20 alders determined the fire susceptibility of these species. Of those sampled, 80% of the trees less than 3 cm in basal diameter were killed. The approximate age of those killed was calculated by comparison with basal diameters for known-age stems. Management alternatives from control to enhancement of hawthorn and alder are discussed.
