Relationship of oocysts of Isospora buteonis from the barn-owl (Tyto alba) to muscle cysts of sarcosporidians from the house mouse (Mus musculus)

, : Relationship of oocysts of Isospora buteonis from the barn-owl (Tyto alba) to muscle cysts of sarcosporidians from the house mouse (Mus musculus). Folia Parasitologica 23(3): 285

In 1975, 6 of 45 Tyto alba owls were found to be infected with oocysts apparently Isospora buteonis measuring 17 to 20 X 10 to 13 mu m and covered with a very thin membrane. There was no Stieda body and the 2 ovoid sporocysts harboured 4 sporozoites within a bilayered membrane. 4 laboratory mice and 3 Microtus arvalis were infected orally with 500,000 sporocysts from 2 of the owls. From day 67 onwards the skeletal muscles, diaphragm, heart and tongue of the mice were found to contain typical, septate cysts of sarcosporidans with bradyzoites measuring 5 to 9 X 2 mu m. Infection in the muscles of M. arvalis was not found.
