Tests of a collection of cultivars, breeding material, primitive varieties and wild forms in 1971 and 1972 revealed considerable variation in protein content, most cultivars being on the negative side of the distribution curve. Correlations between protein content and grain yield were negative and significant, but the highest-yielding group did include some material with relatively high contents.
