In 1963, in a Russian Large White breeding herd, daily gain from weaning to 100 kg body weight, consumption of FU/kg gain, and age at 100 kg averaged 596 g, 4.72 and 224 days resp. In 1972, after 10 yr of strictly applied assortative mating, corresponding figures were 679 g, 3.99 and 209 days. The mid-parent h2 of daily gain, age at 100 kg, backfat thickness at the 6th-7th rib, eye-muscle area and internal fat weight was 0.35, 0.50, 0.47, 0.47 and 0.44 resp.
