Results of study of knot distribution on the surface of Spruce sawlogs

, : Results of study of knot distribution on the surface of Spruce sawlogs. Lesnoi Zhurnal (5): 137-140

An analysis was made of knot distribution, based on studies of 150 Picea abies logs at an Archangel mill specializing in the production of export lumber. Knot diameter did not exceed 80 mm and most knots were 10-50 mm. The number of knots ranged from 1 to 20 per linear m. Knots were not uniformly distributed on the log surface, and in some logs 60-80% of all knots were found on only a quarter of the surface.
