The survey on wheat, barley and maize production is in two phases, and this report is concerned with the general characteristics of cereal-producing farms, the size of production areas, storage, and farm structures. The report on phase 2 (farming techniques) will appear later. Phase 1 studies 31 'departements' in 10 regions of France, of which 39% specialize in cereal production, with the highest rate in Ile de France, Champagne and the Centre.
