At age 13 yr, the tallest provenances were those from the Romanian Carpathians, Bohemia, the Beskidy Mts., Erzgebirge and NE Poland. Those from Finland, France, Switzerland, Italy, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria were below average ht. Growth of Austrian provenances was inversely related to the altitude of their place of origin. Late shoot growth occurred mainly in provenances from E. Europe, S. Germany and SE France, early growth in alpine, German upland and Scandinavian provenances.
