Results of tryptophan loading in infants with untreated phenylketonuria

, : Results of tryptophan loading in infants with untreated phenylketonuria. Deutsche Gesundheitswesen 32(38): 1790-1793

Before diet treatment started, 15 infants from 2 to 9 weeks old with phenylketonuria and blood phenylalanine exceeding, in 14, 20 mg/100 ml, had DL-tryptophan 200 mg/kg bodyweight by mouth. Average excretion of kynurenine in 24-h urine was double that in healthy infants, but that of xanthurenic acid was about the same for both; the tryptophan conversion rate was concluded to be higher in the phenylketonurics, although only 4 had pathological kynurenine values after loading.
