Grains of Lutescens 17, Hostianum 237 and Odessa 3 were treated with gamma -ray doses of 5, 7, 10 and 12 kR. The greatest mutagenic effect occurred with doses of 7-10 kR. In the M2, mutants occurred in Odessa 3 and Hostianum 237. The mutant plants differed from the initial forms in the compactness, colour and shape of the ear, the sterility of individual florets and spikelets, and also in yield. The greatest number of sterile florets occurred with a dose of 12 kR.
