The results of preliminary tests, in which populations were tested for suitability for use as 0-type maintainers of male sterility, and of subsequent crossing tests of the selected populations, showed that in the preliminary tests, attention should be paid in the first place to those populations giving progeny with good performance in respect of yield and bolting, and only in the second place to male sterility.
