Retention of salt and water in infants of low birthweight: physiopathogenic aspects

, : Retention of salt and water in infants of low birthweight: physiopathogenic aspects. Archives Francaises de Pediatrie 34(3): 206-218

In 39 premature or small-for-date infants of low birthweight, the majority being premature, abrupt excessive weight gain was accompanied by peripheral oedema. The syndrome appeared between days 13 and 90, average 43, of life. Its onset coincided with, on average, a corrected gestational age of about 40 weeks, i.e., the expected term date. Incidence, frequent with unmodified cow's milk, was reduced by humanized cow's milk and did not occur with breast milk.
