Retractocephalus - a new genus of cephaline gregarines (Protozoa: Sporozoa) from insects

, : Retractocephalus - a new genus of cephaline gregarines (Protozoa: Sporozoa) from insects. Current Science 45(18): 668-669

A new genus Retractocephalus is proposed to accommodate cephaline gregarines from the mid-gut of beetles of the family Chrysomelidae. Retractocephalus n.g. is distinguished by having sporonts in syzygy, a simple globular retractile epimerite, dehiscence of cysts is by simple rupture and barrel-shaped spores are extruded in chains. Retractocephalus raphidopalpii n.sp. from Raphidopalpa foveicollis is described. The parasite develops initially within the midgut epithelium of the host.
