Return of Psoroptes communis ovis, the sheep scab mite

, : Return of Psoroptes communis ovis, the sheep scab mite. Parasitology 75(2): xxxii

Sheep scab was eradicated from Britain in 1952 but it reappeared in 1973. The disease spread from Lancashire to Yorkshire and Wales and as far south as Cornwall and Kent. Sheep scab can be controlled by compulsory plunge dipping in 0.016% gamma-HCH, but during the intervening years when there was no scab some farmers replaced their dip tanks with mechanical showers. In a recent trial, however, showering failed to eradicate sheep scab.
