Return of kala-azar

, : Return of kala-azar. Journal of the Indian Medical Association 65(3): 89-90

Visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) caused by Leishmania donovani was formerly endemic in well-defined areas of the eastern half of the Indian subcontinent, with periodical outbreaks of higher incidence. It is recorded that, following the introduction of regular house-spraying with DDT to control the anopheline vectors of malaria, phlebotomines were eliminated from houses and kala-azar became rare.
