In trials in the Mojave Desert of S. California, seeds of 5 native shrubs, Ambrosia dumosa (white bursage), Atriplex canescens (fourwing saltbush), Atriplex polycarpa (desert saltbush), Larrea tridentata (creosote bush) and Lepidospartum squamatum (scalebroom) were collected, germinated in a glasshouse and transplanted in Dec. 1972-Jan. 1973 to 2 sites with gravelly loamy sand soil and an annual rainfall of 7-8 in. Seeds were also sown directly for comparison.
