Reversal of ethionine intoxication in the domestic fowl with methionine and adenine sulphate

, : Reversal of ethionine intoxication in the domestic fowl with methionine and adenine sulphate. British Poultry Science 18(5): 567-571

In each trial 250 to 300 chickens 14 or 15 days old had DL-ethionine at 2 g/kg diet. After 2 days they were reselected by bodyweight. In the 1st trial, from 16 days old they got by intraperitoneal injection, morning and afternoon daily, DL-methionine 5, 10, 20, 60 or 100 mg daily for 4 days and were killed on the morning of the 4th day [sic]. In the 2nd trial the injections were of adenine sulphate 4, 8, 12, 16 or 20 mg daily. In the 3rd trial they got 10 mg adenine sulphate daily and different amounts of methionine from 17 days old for 2 days. Bodyweight increased linearly for the first 2 days in chickens given methionine, the response increasing with amount, not linearly but in a sigmoid curve. Weight of body, liver and breast muscle were related to dose. Adenine sulphate alone had no effect on any variable measured, but it increased the effect of methionine. Growth rate was greatest with 50 mg methionine, with or without adenine sulphate. Largest difference in growth rate between groups given methionine or both was with 20 to 30 mg methionine daily.
