Review of regional project S-49 - genetic methods of improving dairy cattle for the South

, : Review of regional project S-49 - genetic methods of improving dairy cattle for the South. Journal of Dairy Science 60(3): 473-481

Crossbreeding experiments carried out using zebu and European breeds failed to produce a dairy crossbreed suited to the hot and humid conditions characteristic of southern USA. It was finally concluded that selection among AI sires offered the best means of improving genetic merit of the Holstein-Friesian herds in the South. Results of within-breed selection projects are briefly discussed.
