Sexual reproduction in the cloudberry

, : Sexual reproduction in the cloudberry. Annales Agriculturae Fenniae 15(4): 295-303

The cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) spreads by means of rhizomes under natural conditions and seldom reproduces by seed. One reason for the poor seed germination observed is the thick, hard testa. After stratification under natural conditions (seed sown in a field and in a bog), 40% seed germination was obtained, whereas after stratification in a cold chamber at 1 deg C for 13 months germination was only 31%. No seeds treated with concentrated H2SO4 germinated.
