Studies on competition between grass and legumes in a mixed sward. 7. Comparison of the capacity of pasture plants grown in isolation to spread by forming tillers or branches

The spread of cocksfoot, Ladino clover, tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass grown in isolated stands was investigated. Tillering increased rapidly in cocksfoot only when tiller numbers were low, but ceased when tillers were crowded and in contact with each other. Kentucky bluegrass spread indefinitely with some of the tillers forming rhizomes throughout the season. Ladino clover spread indefinitely with stolons and their branches vigorously colonising bare ground.
