The mechanism by which glucagon induces the release of amino acids from muscle and its relevance to fasting

, : The mechanism by which glucagon induces the release of amino acids from muscle and its relevance to fasting. Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, B 196(1124): 347-365

A raised level of glucagon was induced rapidly and maintained steadily for an hour or more in the circulation of fed or fasted rabbits. During that time the concentrations of 18 amino acids, of glucose and of insulin were measured in samples of arterial blood and of blood leaving skeletal muscle, taken simultaneously. Glucagon increased glucose in arterial blood and, at the same time, decreased most of the amino acids.
