The utilization of dietary energy by steers during periods of restricted food intake and subsequent realimentation. 2. The comparative energy requirements of penned and exercised steers for long term maintenance at constant live weight

, : The utilization of dietary energy by steers during periods of restricted food intake and subsequent realimentation. 2. The comparative energy requirements of penned and exercised steers for long term maintenance at constant live weight. Journal of Agricultural Science, UK 88: 27-33

2. The Boran and Hereford X Boran bullocks described above, maintained for at least 22 weeks at constant liveweight 275 or 450 kg, were made to walk for 5, 10 or 15 km a day at a speed of 5 km/h and the energy consumption for maintenance of constant liveweight was compared with that required with no exercise. Bullocks of 275 kg required 24, 49 or 73% more DM, according to the distance walked, and those of 450 kg required 34, 69 or 97% more.
