Autonomy in euthyroid goitre: maladaptation to iodine deficiency

, : Autonomy in euthyroid goitre: maladaptation to iodine deficiency. Clinical Endocrinology, UK 8(3): 257-265

In 486 patients from an area of iodine deficiency with euthyroid goitre but no scintigraphic evidence of autonomous adenoma the overall frequency of a negative thyroliberin test was 15%. It increased with age, weight of goitre and existence of nonhomogeneity in the thyroid scan. Sex, contraceptive drugs and treatment for reduction of the goitre had no effect, but previous treatment with iodine significantly increased the incidence of negative tests and increased the mean free thyroxine index.
