Botanical composition of cattle diets on desert grassland range

, : Botanical composition of cattle diets on desert grassland range. Research Report, Agricultural Experiment Station, New Mexico State University (363): 6

Seasonal changes in dietary composition and selectivity of cattle grazing on desert grassland range was studied using oesophageally-fistulated steers. Plant spp. present in oesophageal samples collected in July, Aug., and Nov. 1976 were determined by histological analysis. The pasture vegetation was dominated by black grama, (Bouteloua eriopoda), mesa dropseed (Sporobolus flexuosus) and red three-awn (Aristida longiseta), but many other grasses and forbs were present.
