Crofters co-op network spreads in the islands

, : Crofters co-op network spreads in the islands. Farmers Weekly 90(11): xv, xvii

A network of multi-purpose co-operatives is being established in the Outer Hebrides. If they survive, they will make considerable impact on agricultural production in the islands, which for a long time have depended on mainland producers for the bulk of their food. The aim of the co-ops is to raise the general standard of living of remote communities and provide enough employment opportunities to slow down the traditional exodus of young Hebrideans to Glasgow and Scotland's other major cities.
