Distributional adaptations of root systems in desert environments

, : Distributional adaptations of root systems in desert environments. Science Series, Range Science Department, Colorado State University (26): 85-91

From the US/IBP studies on desert ecosystems in the Chihuahuan desert, New Mexico, it was shown that desert spp. possess highly varied root systems and the degree to which they extended their roots was highly variable. Desert spp. do not possess high root:shoot ratios as was originally thought; root:shoot ratios are highly variable within and between spp. and do not increase with increasing aridity. Root:shoot ratio in shrubs was shown to be age dependent.
