A comparative study of lowland peat-bog soils subjected to reclamation, similar virgin soils, and lysimeter experiments showed that drainage alone was not sufficient to increase the activity of nitrifying micro-organisms. Appreciable growth of nitrifiers occurred after primary soil cultivation, application of fertilizers and cropping. The activity of saccharase and protease, which control carbon and nitrogen metabolism, increased with soil reclamation, especially in the third year.
