Efficiency of sticky boards for population estimation of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stal) (Hemiptera: Delphasidae) on rice hills

, : Efficiency of sticky boards for population estimation of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stal) (Hemiptera: Delphasidae) on rice hills. Applied Entomology and Zoology, 132: 55-62

A simple sampling method using a sticky board (18 X 25 cm) for estimating the populations of nymphs of Nilaparvata lugens (Stal) on rice hills was developed and its efficiency studied in Japan. When a rice hill was struck by hand 3 times, about 90% of the total catch was obtained with the first 2 blows. About 40% of the nymphs that fell round the hill were caught by a sticky board in the standard position.
