Energy expenditure of rats tube-fed at different energy levels

, : Energy expenditure of rats tube-fed at different energy levels. Journal of Physiology 290: 17P-18P

Energy output of female rats 6 months old was estimated continuously for 2 and 3 months in 2 experiments. Initial voluntary energy intake was about 145 kJ daily; thereafter the rats were given 100 to 200 kJ daily by tube. During the first experiment 2 groups of 8 rats retained 542 and 927 kJ while mean weights changed by -8 and +18 g; the mean difference in energy content of the carcasses was 580 kJ. During the 4 to 5 days starting about 10 days after change in intake, weight change was insignificant and not related to energy balance but there was an apparent retention of about 10 kJ daily. Within each experiment the regression of output on intake was highly significant.
