Helminth fauna of waterfowl in central Oklahoma

, : Helminth fauna of waterfowl in central Oklahoma. Journal of Wildlife Diseases 16(1): 59-64

Free-ranging waterfowl wintering in and migrating through central Oklahoma [USA] were collected and examined for intestinal helminths. Seventy-one ducks, including mallards (A. platyrhynchos), American widgeons (A. americana), blue-winged teal (A. discors) and green-winged teal (A. crecca) were examined; 64 (90.1%) harbored 1 or more species of Metazoa. Echinostoma revolutum, Zygocotyle lunata, Tracheophilus cymbius, Apatemon gracilis, Hypoderacum conoideum, Psilochasmus oxyuris, Cloacotaenia megalops, Fimbriaria fasciolaris, Hymenolepis sp., Diorchis longiovum, Microsomacanthus compressa, Dicranotaenia coronula, Corynosoma constrictum, Tetrameres crami, Echinuria uncinata, Epomidiostomum uncinatum, Amidostomum sp., Heterakis dispar and microfilariae were identified. An experimental, non-flying population of ducks was established and monitored to determine the extent of helminth transmission in central Oklahoma. Helminths (7 spp.) were acquired by the sentinel birds during the study. The significance of the parasites recovered and variations in prevalence and species composition of the infections were discussed as they related to the life cycles of the parasites and the ecology of the hosts.
