, : Influence of nitrogen on stem anatomy of two Populus clones. Wood Science 11(3): 176-181

Cuttings from clones of Populus tristis X P. balsamifera and a natural hybrid P. deltoides X P. nigra were grown for 3 months in aerated nutrient solutions with 8 different concentrations of N (0-70 p.p.m.). Cuttings without N treatment showed a slower diam. and ht. growth, and had a larger number and % of vessels, shorter fibres, and a lower % of ray cells and G-fibres (fibres possessing a gelatinous (G-) layer). More than 10 p.p.m.
