Influence of nutritional factors on the renotrophic action of ACTH in the uninephrectomized rat

, : Influence of nutritional factors on the renotrophic action of ACTH in the uninephrectomized rat. Hormone and Metabolic Research 11(12): 669-674

One kidney was removed from 36 female Sprague-Dawley rats which had a stock diet and sodium chloride solution 9 g/litre freely for 7 days before and 2 days after operation, 20 rats on the same diet before operation but given NaCl solution only after operation and 19 rats on the same diet before and given no solid food after the operation but with free access to glucose solution 30 g/100 ml for 7 days before and 2 days after the operation. After the operation 19, 10 and 7 rats from the respective groups were given beta -24-corticotropin 18 mu g/100 g bodyweight daily for 2 days. In rats starved after the operation but given NaCl solution, renal compensatory hypertrophy (RCH), which was apparent 48 h after the operation in fed rats, was suppressed and bodyweight and weights of heart, liver and remaining kidney were decreased. In starved rats given corticotropin, weight of heart and remaining kidney was normal. RCH was also impaired in rats given glucose solution but was restored by corticotropin.

Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is an enzyme implicated in the pathogenesis of renal diseases. Renal involvement is the principal cause of morbidity and mortality in children with Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP). The aim of this study was to ev...
