Is the anti-rhinopneumonitis immune complex a cause of paresis in the horse?

, : Is the anti-rhinopneumonitis immune complex a cause of paresis in the horse?. Svensk Veterinartidning 32(1): 15-18

Paresis caused by equine rhinopneumonitis virus at present is considered to be an immune complex disease. Horses given a primary infection with this virus showed recurrent infection with an accelerated antibody response. The newly formed virus and antibody appear to form a complex which collects in the blood-brain barrier, kidneys and liver. Activation of complement by binding to the immune complex leads to vessel changes with consequent vasculitis.
