In studies involving an unspecified number of varieties and mutant lines characterized by different protein percentages in mature grains, wide variability was observed in the rate and duration of both dry matter and N accumulation in developing grains, part of which could be attributed to genetic factors. The application of N fertilizer between heading and flowering effected an increase in the N content per grain, which varied in magnitude between the different genotypes.
