Measuring sperm competition in the boll weevil by the use of females whose spermathecae have been surgically removed

, : Measuring sperm competition in the boll weevil by the use of females whose spermathecae have been surgically removed. Annals of the Entomological Society of America, 724: 500-502

A test was devised by which sperm competition could be measured directly in Anthonomus grandis grandis Boh. Spermathecae were surgically removed from the females and these females were allowed to mate with irradiated and then non-irradiated males or vice versa, with only 4 h separating the matings. By this method, egg-hatch data could be used to measure sperm competitiveness without being concerned about the unknown effect that sperm stored in the spermatheca would have on egg hatch.
