Non-hemoglobin related effects on heart rate in iron deficiency anemia

, : Non-hemoglobin related effects on heart rate in iron deficiency anemia. Nutrition reports international 18(6): 647-651

Heart rates of three experimental groups which were either treated with iron dextran, transfused with whole blood, or untreated were compared at rest and during exercise. Mean hemoglobin (Hb) of each group was similar. The heart rate response to exercise was significantly lower after treatment with iron dextran than in subjects transfused with whole blood or from the untreated control subjects. Data suggest that iron treatment of iron deficient, anemic human subjects reduces the stress of physical activity more than can be expected by the improvement in the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood alone.
