Prevalence of lactose intolerance in children with recurrent abdominal pain

, : Prevalence of lactose intolerance in children with recurrent abdominal pain. Archives of Disease in Childhood 53(8): 693-693

Tolerance tests after oral lactose (2 g/kg body wt.) were performed on (i) 22 girls and 28 boys (mean age, 9.5 yr) with recurrent abdominal pain, and (ii) 17 girls and 23 boys (mean age, 9.6 yr) without such pain. Lactose intolerance was diagnosed if abdominal pain and/or diarrhoea developed in association with a blood glucose rise of <20 mg/100 ml. Only 1 of (i) and none of (ii) fulfilled these criteria.
