Selection of fowls for litter requirement

, : Selection of fowls for litter requirement. Aktuelle Arbeiten zur artgemassen Tierhaltung 1978 Bericht uber die Tagung der Deutschen Veterinarmedizinischen Gesellschaft eV Fachgruppe Verhaltensforschung vom 2-4 November 1978 im Tierhygienischen Institut Freiburg: 158-164

White Leghorns were selected in 2 directions (240 birds/generation) for 3 traits indicating their need for litter: frequency of scratching, frequency of "bathing" in the straw, and choice of litter or wire-mesh floor. In the 3rd generation, the frequency of scratching was 15.3% in the high line birds v 7.9 in the low-line birds, frequency of bathing 2.6 v 2.0%, and time spent on litter 37.6 v 22.8%.
