Selective group thinning in beech: principles, value development after 10 years, and practical guidelines

, : Selective group thinning in beech: principles, value development after 10 years, and practical guidelines. Allgemeine Forst und Jagdzeitung 150(6): 105-111

Six 0.25-ha plots in pure beech stands (49-67 yr old) that were poorly and irregularly stocked with good-quality stems near Gottingen, W. Germany, were thinned by the group method from 1966 to 1976. The proportion of good (B and B/C) quality timber increased from 34 to 49%, compared with an increase of up to 36% max. in normally thinned plots. Results confirmed previous findings that irregular (close) spacing did not produce corresponding excentricity of the stems.
