Some results of investigations of the physical and mechanical properties of the root systems of oak and ash

, : Some results of investigations of the physical and mechanical properties of the root systems of oak and ash. Lesnoi Zhurnal (1): 22-26

An oak/ash (Quercus robur/Fraxinus excelsior) stand established in 1880 on a chernozem soil in the Dor region was cut in 1942 and in 1974. Investigations were made (after the 1974 felling) in order to determine the depth at which most of the lateral roots were located, and to determine the strength of the roots (in tension, compression, bending and shear). The results are shown in tables. Static cutting tests were made on lateral roots of various dimensions.
