The growth of the grass sward under grazing

, : The growth of the grass sward under grazing. Grassland Research Institute: UK, Grassland Research Institute: Annual report 1977: 57-58

Perennial ryegrass S23 established in 1976 was continuously grazed by sheep at moderate stocking rate in 1977 or was cut infrequently. In early May both swards had 16 000-17 000 tillers/m2. At cutting in mid-June there were 13 000 tillers/m2; tiller numbers subsequently never reached the spring values and declined to about 6000/m2 in July and Aug. In the grazed sward the number of tillers increased irregularly throughout the yr and was >20 000/m2 in July and Aug. and >30 000/m2 in autumn.
