The influence of soil herbicides on the nitrogen-fixing activity of blue-green algae

, : The influence of soil herbicides on the nitrogen-fixing activity of blue-green algae. Byulleten' Vsesoyuznogo Nauchno Issledovatel' skogo Instituta Sel' skokhozyaistvennoi Mikrobiologii (32): 60-62

The effects of molinate and thiobencarb were studied on Nostoc and Anabaena spp. Light microscopy revealed granulation of the cytoplasm, plasmolysis, deformation of the cell envelope and lysis of the cell contents in treated algae. Thiobencarb was the more toxic herbicide. In soil treated with molinate and inoculated with Anabaena variabilis, the alga showed high tolerance to the herbicide but this tolerance is attributed to adsorption of the herbicide on soil.
