The suitability of different hot-bed materials and organic substrates in spring cultivation of melons in greenhouses

, : The suitability of different hot-bed materials and organic substrates in spring cultivation of melons in greenhouses. Acta Agraria et Silvestria, Agraria 18(2): 83-100

In 2-year trials the use of straw bales or manure hot-beds increased melon yield by 29 and 20%, respectively, compared with the control plants Organic substrates (used with the bales and manure) had an even greater effect on yield: compared with controls the increase in yield was 105% on bark compost, 97% on raised bog peat, 84% on raised bog peat + sawdust (1:1) and 73% on raised bog peat + lignite (1:1).
