The transformation of intermediate products of nitrification in soil

In a laboratory experiment, hydroxylamine and NaNO2 labelled with 15N were incubated for 1-7 days under various conditions of aeration in a virgin derno-podzolic soil (pH 4.0) and an old ploughed soil (pH 6.3) with and without preliminary sterilization of the soil by autoclaving. In sterilized soil of pH 6.3, 43% of the hydroxylamine was fixed in organic form in the first 24 hours of incubation and 16% was lost as gaseous N2O.
