The name of a non-formal education project using popular theater in Botswana -- Laedza Batanani, meaning something like "Community Awakening" -- indicates its espoused Freirian ideology. This case study is one example of how Freire's ideas have been distorted and used in ways which potentially could intensify the oppression of powerless groups in the Third World.
