A further contribution to the problem of the spread of spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) in Fennoscandia

, : A further contribution to the problem of the spread of spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) in Fennoscandia. Journal of Biogeography 4: 219-227

Radiocarbon dates for identifiable stages of spruce spread are added to a previously published map and the resulting pattern is compared with a map of the bioclimatic regions of Fennoscandia (based on meteorological data). Similarities between the maps are explained by reference to seasonal factors favouring seed survival and growth of 2-3 yr old seedlings. Rates of migration and human influences are considered to have been secondary factors in the spread of spruce.
