The paper is based on the methodology developed in the project on cultivation systems for small farmers in Central America initiated by the Centro Agronomico Tropical de Investigacion y Ensenanza. The discussion assumes that the geographical area for research has already been determined and that research will have certain objectives such as improving production, income, food supply, employment and productivity.
