A general survey of environmental influence on the social hierarchy function in pigs

, : A general survey of environmental influence on the social hierarchy function in pigs. Acta Agriculturae Scandinavica 30(4): 388-392

There is a close connexion between the function and stability of the social hierarchy and the surrounding environment. Environmental factors which break down the social ranking involve development of frustrated and aggressive behaviour, with increased tail biting and consequent reduced productivity. Competitive methods of feeding increase aggression, as a result of which the pigs gain weight according to rank, providing the hierarchy is stable.
