A grade index for pruned butt logs

, : A grade index for pruned butt logs. New Zealand Journal of Forestry Science 10(2): 419-438

Sixty-three straight pruned Pinus radiata butt logs 4.9 m long, divided into 4 age classes, were sawn to 25 mm boards in a standard pattern. Produce was graded by New Zealand National Timber Grading Rules. It was found that the production of clear wood and the values and grades obtained from pruned butt logs were determined by 3 major factors: log size, defect core size, and log conversion %. Grade Index was defined as (d.b.h. X log conversion %)/defect core (mm).
