The undertakings which were sponsored by the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno in the introduction of large-scale public irrigation systems have left a wealth of experience for planners and vastly improved the agriculture of the region. Some of these are outlined, e.g. the decision whether to irrigate large areas slowly so that all could share, or to concentrate on smaller intensive schemes.
