A handbook of the Amazonian species of Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) (Diptera: Culicidae)

, : A handbook of the Amazonian species of Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) (Diptera: Culicidae). Mosquito Systematics, 131: 1-81

This handbook contains sections on the systematics, taxonomic characters (of the adults and fourth-instar larvae), bionomics and medical importance of the 15 species of the subgenus Nyssorhynchus of Anopheles that are known in the Amazonia region of South America (mostly Brazil but also including parts of some of the northern coastal states); illustrations of adult morphology; illustrated keys to the females, male genitalia and larvae of these species; an annotated list of the species, with information on distinguishing characters, affinities, evolutionary trends, intraspecific and geographical variation (where appropriate), bionomics, medical importance and distribution of each species; distribution maps of the different species-groups within the subgenus in the Americas (as far north as the border of Mexico with the USA); hypothetical phylogenic trees of 2 of the species-groups; and illustrations of larval morphology. A. darlingi Root, A. aquasalis Curry and A. nuneztovari Gabaldon are cited as primary vectors of malaria (although not necessarily in the Amazonia region) and A. allopha (Peryassu) and A. braziliensis (Chagas) as secondary vectors.
